Thy Kingdom Come by Seyi Vibez

BACKGROUND

I had reservations about Seyi Vibez before I started listening to him; I must say, I should've started listening to him earlier. He has an exciting voice which surprised me on my first listen to his discography. He has risen to fame quite quickly, and it's understandable why. He also drops very frequently, and as a lover of music, I appreciate artists who drop a lot ( Yes, this is a sub to J. Cole and Sampha). he has dropped 4 projects since the start of the year, but his latest release, Thy Kingdom Come, is my favourite as yet. One thing I did not like about it, though, was the number of features. I would've loved to see him collaborate with other artists on the album.

THY KINGDOM COME

Basically his previous album title without the first word. I don't understand the relation between the title and the songs, to be honest, but I still fw it. It could've been that the entire album was just vibes and not much substance. I fw that. Seyi is the kind of guy making bops rather than emotional masterpieces, and his amapiano-inspired album is the epitome of that fact. This album also had the perfect length so as to keep you hooked.

Man of the year

The song with the most streams, and for good reason. Not my favourite song, but the production was so good you'd want to play it twice. As a non-Nigerian listening to this album, it was quite difficult keeping up with the lyrics because over half of it is in Yoruba, but you'd get the feel of it. This song's name is perfect because he's the man of the year in his eyes, which explains the numerous drops. he owns 2023.

Professor

This is a hood love song. The Production overshadowed the lyrics at some point. In truth, this song was just vibes because over half of it was one word. A good tune for the clubs; I respect that.

Hushpuppi

I loved the piano at the beginning of the song; so smooth. Great production. He's singing about the good life, so it's relatable. But generally just another vibes song with a great beat. This beat would've sounded better if it was Asake's vocals, but I can't complain. I don't love this song, but I like it.

Karma

The vocals at the beginning should have lasted longer; that would have made the song even better than it already is. This song has a spiritual feel to it. The production is so soft and on point. I really wish I understood this particular song. This is one of my favourite songs on the album, even though I understood just 1% of it.

Migos

Yeah, this is it, the song with my favourite beat. The hook was amazing. I can't say much about this song, but you'll understand me when you listen.

Highlife Interlude

This was a refreshing song, free of all amapiano elements. This song is a sonic representation of a local Nollywood movie. Phyno carried this song, as expected, but Seyi's verse was fire. Once again. I was unable to understand many parts of the song, but I honestly fucked with it. This is my favourite song on the album, all things considered.

Trumpet

Yet another song where the production carried, maybe because I didn't understand the entire song? The production of this song is so good you'll find yourself moving your head to the beat.

Flakky

I have no words for this song except that I liked the production. Nothing else really stood out for me.

LOML

I'm a huge fan of Ami Faku's vocals, so I was very happy to hear her on this song, but I didn't like that her verse was so short. Even though the beat stood out, The vocals were so good, especially Ami's underlying vocals. Also one of my favourite songs on the album.

All the time

This song's beat was fantastic. I'm sure the producer, whoever he is, is so proud of this beat because he should. Seyi's rapping was so so good. This was a great outro to the album. I'd like to hear a full rap album from him sometime in the future.

SUMMARY

All in all, this was a great album. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's quite refreshing. Seyi's style is still raw, but I look forward to hearing his more advanced sound. I have high hopes for him.
